Driving the hills and valleys of Middlesex for most of the past year, one can’t miss the yards and fields dotted with “Repeal the SAFE Act” signs.

SafeAct pic 1-12-14DAt the bottom of many of the signs is mention and  acknowledgement of the SCOPE organization, which along with many other hunting and shooting clubs in NYS have vigorously opposed the so-called “SAFE” Act, on the basis of our Second Amendment Rights.   What many who see the signs may not know is the high level of opposition right in our own community.  The Messenger Newspaper did an extensive article on January 12th, which has much that should be of interest to residents and to all who own property in our area, and those locally involved did a good job of explaining their positions.  The signs, advocates point out, are not election signs which must be removed after election, but are expressions of free speech on a life-or-death issue.

To the upper left is the beginning of an editorial by Bill Button which explains well the importance of the issue.  It is continued in the columns just to the left.  Click to enlarge for better readability.

It should be pointed out that a comparably-sized article appeared next to Mr. Button’s, but in support of the law.  It was written by an advocate from NYC, ignoring many of the issues relevant to rural residents.

Show below is the front page story carried by the Messenger, of the demonstration and events commemorating this stand for the Second Amendment, with more detail on what is at the heart of the complaints.
